Here are a few close up images of scratched marks made on my painting surfaces. This painting is current a work in progress, with more layers yet to be added. I love the idea that these marks exist on the first few layers, either as words seen in the landscape, a name, a declaration of love to another, a slight, a quote heard or read, part of a story, poem or a thought that comes to mind during the process of its production.
Sometimes these marks direct the direction of the painting, setting the tone of the image, as each layer of colour is laid on to the surface of the paper.
