Here are some images from the painting I was working on earlier in the week. These close ups and the full image display the texture of the layers of colours and marks. The mixed-media paper I am using is made by Daler Rowney, a new pad of paper they have developed that I picked up at Fine Art & Framing in Taunton. It is quite sturdy and works well, considering the amount of layering I have added on these paintings, through the constant rubbing back to previous layers, revealing the previous layers of colour.
This painting is inspired from a cycle ride I took a few weeks back. I began at Longrun in Taunton, drawing and observing the colours of the Summer landscape near the lake. I then went to Bishops Lydeard, 5 miles North-East of Taunton, looking at the various old buildings and mill, before passing the Old Police House, heading to Cotherstone Manor, St Agnes Well and up the Cotherstone Road, making my way to the top of Cotherstone Hill in the Quantocks. Once there I viewed the 360 degree panoramic view, looking over at Wales, Minehead, Clatsworthy, the source of the River Tone, Wellington, Taunton and more.
These close-ups reveal the scratched marks I made on the first few layers, inspired by those I have seen on buildings, walls and under railway bridges, where people have left their mark. It also reminds me of the graffiti marks, in its true sense of the word being scratched marks on a surface, that many people have through history done somewhere in one time or other.
The full image of the painting shows the balanced composition between the purple and yellow complimentary colours and their interaction with the red lines. The close-ups reveal the various colours laid, each responding to colours and objects seen on this journey and the memories sparked during the journey.
